Essential System Administration
ISBN: 978-0596003432
Like with Unix System Administration Handbook I'm using this for my Unix/Linux System Administration course at UCONN. I have to say that reading around 100 pages out of this book per week is one of the more tedious assignments I've had during my college career. If at all possible I'd recommend using this only as a reference. Don't try to read it from start to finish. Unless, of course, you're really into Unix and Linux and being a system administrator is your dream career. I am finding useful things here and there when it comes to understanding web servers, but from a web designer's point of view I'd focus my attentions on other areas.
One thing this book (and course) has taught me is how to deal more effectively with system admins. I really do understand their job more, and what they go through in making sure that everything runs smoothly. (It is for the most part a thankless job, and they don't get the credit they deserve.) So maybe this should be required reading for everyone in the office...especially management.
