Macromedia Flash Professional 8: Beyond the Basics

Flash Professional 8: Beyond the Basics book cover
By Shane Rebenschied
ISBN: 978-0321293879
I just finished this one for my Multimedia Web Authoring course. It was easy enough to follow, but for some reason strange things happened with my project. I would follow the steps and type out the scripts, but certain elements would work only partially, or not at all. Others seem to have no problem, so it is probably on my end. It was very frustrating to look compare my steps and scripts to those in the book, and still not have the elements work the way they should. (I seem to have this problem quite a bit in Flash when it comes to tutorials. I find Flash to be one of the more tedious and picky software programs to work with, and tend to avoid using it for my design projects.)

One thing I did appreciate about this book was the full color illustrations and graphics inside. It made it easier to compare my code when I could see which parts should be blue, which should be black, etc. Keep in mind that the title does say "beyond the basics", which means some sort of Flash knowledge is necessary before you jump in and start building a website with this book. I found his explanations very useful and informative when it came to the "why's". It is definitely a book in which you must open up Flash and follow along instead of just sitting and reading.
