Hartford Stage Company poster - Much Ado About Nothing

Midterm project for my Spring 2007 Intro to Graphic Design course.

Here’s the actual assignment:

Midterm Assignment
Theatrical Poster Design

You need to design a poster for the Hartford Stage Company. It will be advertising one of their Shakespearian plays. The Hartford Stage Company is trying to reach out to a younger audience as their primary audience is middle-aged. They want to appeal to younger theater-goers in hopes that it will bring new awareness of the Hartford Stage Company as well as kind of make Shakespeare more “hip.”

They would prefer that the poster be in black and white so that they can shrink it down to be used in newspaper ads. But if you feel the need to use color, you may use color.

You have a bit of leeway in this project. You may picked the title of the play you want to advertise from the list below. Please make a note of whether it is a comedy of a tragedy, and design your poster accordingly.

Choose a title from the plays listed.

Comedies - A Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Cybeline, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing

Tragedies - Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear

Finished Size is: 11” x 17”

Poster MUST include the following information (besides the title of the play):

Title and Author: William Shakespeare
Hartford Stage Company
50 Church Street Hartford, CT 06103
March 19 - April 26, 2007
Directed By: Michael Wilson
Box Office: 860-527-5151

Professional Presentation is Important!!!!

For the final assignment, you will need to have completed: 4 thumbnail sketches, 2 rough layouts, and a full color (or color noted-if you choose to use color for this assignment) comprehensive layout. The poster should be 11” x 17”.
